Dining table size guide
Dining table size guide
Choose a size that seats everyone comfortably and leaves room to pull chairs out and walk around. Three quick checks:
1. Seating
Allow about 60 cm of table edge per person. Actual capacity depends on your chairs and where the base sits.
| Rectangular, oval & ellipse | Seats |
|---|---|
| 140 cm long | 4 |
| 160–180 cm long | 6 |
| 200–220 cm long | 6–8 |
| 240–280 cm long | 8–10 |
| Round & square | Seats |
|---|---|
| 100 cm | 4 |
| 120–130 cm | 4–6 |
| 140–160 cm | 6 |
2. Space around the table
- 90 cm from the table edge to a wall or furniture is the minimum to sit down and push a chair back.
- 110–120 cm if people walk behind the chairs, e.g. a route to the kitchen.
- 45–60 cm on a side that sits against a wall and isn't used for seating.
3. Minimum room size
Table size plus 90 cm on every side:
| Table size | Room needed (at least) |
|---|---|
| 180 × 90 cm | 360 × 270 cm |
| 200 × 100 cm | 380 × 280 cm |
| 220 × 100 cm | 400 × 280 cm |
| Ø 120 cm round | 300 × 300 cm |
| Ø 140 cm round | 320 × 320 cm |
| Ø 160 cm round | 340 × 340 cm |
90 cm or 100 cm deep?
90 cm suits narrower rooms. 100 cm gives more space between opposite place settings and room for serving dishes down the middle. All our dining tables are 76 cm high.
Quick tip
Mark the table's outline on the floor with masking tape, set a chair at each side and walk around it. It's the easiest way to be sure before you order.
